Douglas Smith is a lawyer, mediator and writer who has practiced Social Security disability law since 1983. He also has served as federal legislative liaison for state bar associations in Washington, D.C.; as a civil trial lawyer; and as an assistant United States Attorney. He has degrees from Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, D.C., and Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas.

Barbara Smith is editor of Pds publications, and also writes and edits publications about home schooling and literature for Third Floor Publishing. She has served as a technical writer and evaluator of federal social services programs including Project Head Start. She has a degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.
